POKER VARIANTS
|
|
While World Series of Poker Main Event may be decided over a game of No Limit Texas Hold’em, there’s plenty of other poker variants out there that can be mastered for potentially huge rewards. We run the rule over some of the most popular…
No Limit Texas Hold’em (NLHE)
Described by Doyle Brunson as ‘the Cadillac of poker’, no limit Hold’em has become far and away the most popular poker variant in the game’s modern era. In NLHE, players are dealt two private ‘hole cards’ which they then combine with the five community cards to make the best five-card hand. There is no upper limit to the amount that can be wagered and a player can bet it all at any time.
Fixed Limit Texas Hold’em (FLHE)
If NLHE is the Cadillac of poker, fixed limit Hold’em is something altogether more functional like a Buick Roadmaster – it’ll get you from A to B, but it certainly won’t be spectacular. FLHE is the same game as NLHE, except bets can only be made in pre-defined increments and are capped at a certain amount, meaning that it is a game far more dictated by maths and the odds of drawing hands coming good.
Pot Limit Omaha (PLO)
Having grown increasingly popular in the last few years, Pot Limit Omaha is a poker variant favoured by the high stakes pros in which instead of receiving two hole cards, players receive four and get to choose which two they use. Other than that, the game essentially plays the same as NLHE, except the maximum bet is the size of the current pot and players must use exactly two of their four cards when making a hand.
Seven-Card Stud (7-Stud)
Formerly one of the most commonly played poker variants, seven-card stud is a game in which community cards are forsaken in favour of each player having their own seven card board. A player’s starting hand consists of two facedown cards and one ‘up card’, before fourth, fifth and sixth street are all dealt face-up. Seventh street is another facedown card and players must then make their best five-card hand.
Razz
The bastard cousin of 7-stud, Razz is another stud game in which the object is to make the lowest possible five card hand. Aces are low and straights and flushes do not count, meaning that the best possible five-card hand is A-2-3-4-5 (a wheel). Betting usually follows a fixed structure, where third and fourth street are the low-limit bets and fifth, sixth and seventh street are all high-limit.
