East is the New West
Further evidence that China is stealthily taking over the world—the poker world, that is. The World Poker Store (WPS), based in Nevada, announced the formation of its wholly-owned China subsidiary, the Shenzhen WPS Entertainment Development Co. Ltd. (SWEDCL). It essentially brings the full Las Vegas experience to China through upscale executive entertainment centers offering affluent Chinese and international clients the opportunity to enjoy world-class hospitality, big-stage shows, VIP amenities and live freeroll Texas hold ‘em tournaments. Also underway, in partnership with the Luneng Group, is an entertainment centre located in the city of Sanya on Hainan Island, otherwise known as “The Hawaii of the East.” The development is a 2.5-square-mile project featuring a marina, golf course, villas, hotel, condominiums and a massive entertainment district.
As the 5th largest real-estate developer in China, the Luneng Group has assets in excess of £13.5 billion and SWEDCL is currently in negotiations with other cities to open more entertainment centres throughout China.
With its global offices, the WPS hosts a worldwide poker community on theworldpokerstore.com, and continuously adds new player members while operating an online retail poker shop with all kinds of poker gear and pro-player memorabilia. Currently running hundreds of tournaments per week, they offer a live, face-to-face, poker tournament experience and boast the support of its advisory board of world-class players like Marcel Luske, Phil Hellmuth, Johnny Chan, Patrik Antonius, Hoyt Corkins and Liz Lieu.
