Premier League Betting Preview: Tottenham vs. Manchester United

5/14/2017
Mauricio Pochettino is attempting to prepare his Tottenham team for their match against Manchester United on Sunday knowing that Chelsea could have the title wrapped up as early as Friday. The impressive manager admitted after their loss against West Ham that the title race was “difficult but not over”, as they are now seven points behind the title favourites.

While there is no new injury news, there are rumours that Kyle Walker could be dropped due to a few lacklustre performances as Pochettino tries to get the best out of his team. The game could also see the return of Mousa Dembele.

Although Pochettino faces a difficult challenge in motivating his players, he knows that Manchester United will likely field a weaker team. Mourinho has clearly stated his intentions to prioritise the Europa League over finishing fourth, as illustrated in their limp defeat by Arsenal. That defeat was Mourinho’s first loss against Wenger in competitive competition and Manchester United’s first loss in twenty-five matches. The Manchester United manager won’t feel too bad though, having made 8 changes for that match as he clearly prioritised the Europe League match against Celta Vigo.

Manchester United are likely to start Wayne Rooney as they rest star players like Rashford and Pogba.

Most bookies have Tottenham as odds on favourite to win the match. Betfred has the North London team at 8/11, while they rate a Manchester United win at 17/4. Sky Bet offer similar odds, with a Tottenham win at 7/10 and a Manchester United victory at 19/5.

There are no surprises when it comes to the scoring markets. Since Manchester United are the lowest scorers of the Premier League’s top seven teams, Tottenham are evident favourites to open the scoring. Harry Kane, the league’s second highest goal scorer on 21 goals, is favourite to score first. Ladbrokes and Betfair give odds of 7/2 for the Englishman to break the deadlock. Dele Alli is seen as the second most likely. The English starlet, who has been linked to Real Madrid after his impressive performances this season, is given 9/2 by Betfred and Betfair Exclusive.
