Paddy Power pays out on league leaders
Irish bookmaker Paddy Power has paid out on Chelsea to win the Barclays Premier League title.
Jose Mourinho’s team is currently top of the table, unbeaten in all competitions this season and lead second placed Southampton by four points.
That has prompted Paddy Power to pay out £400,000 to customers who have predicted that the Blues will win their first league title since 2010, with 27 games remaining.
Over a third of Premier League title bets have been placed on the Stamford Bridge team, almost double that of any other team.
Paddy Power said in a press release: “This is one early seasonal treat the punters should love. We now just have to hope that all Jose’s Christmases really do come at once next May.”
One punter has pocketed £22,400 after placing a £16,000 bet with odds of 2/5, and as many as 44 customers have won £1,000 or more.
This is not the first time that Paddy Power has paid out early on the English league title race, as bets were closed on Arsenal winning the trophy in 2003, before they were beaten to the post by Manchester United, while fellow sportsbook Betfred also wrongfully paid out on Manchester United winning the title in 1998 and 2012.
