International fixtures make Sheffield student £50,000 richer
A set of international friendlies is not seen by many as the highlight of the football season, but for one Sheffield student, Tuesday’s round of games will prove to be unforgettable.
Karla Drew of Sheffield Hallam University found out in the early hours of Wednesday morning to find out she had profited over £50,000 from a £5 stake on a ten-fold accumulator with online sports book BetVictor, and will now be able to continue with her studies.
The bet was settled by a 0-0 draw between Panama, and Canada, despite the home team finishing with 10 men following a sending off, that sealed her prize.
“This is a life-changing win for me,” Karla said. “Being an MSc student (Master of Science), I’m not entitled to any student loan. I want to continue my studies and do a PhD in Sports Psychology and this will enable me to realise my dream.
"I was going to go to sleep before the final results came in but I was just too excited so I carried on refreshing the scores in bed. I only started to really believe I would do it with about 10 minutes to go of the Panama vs Canada game. I still can’t believe I have won."
Other results that contributed to her win were England’s 3-1 victory away to Scotland at Celtic Park and world champions Germany’s 1-0 triumph away to European champions Spain.
