Woman scoops $590m Powerball lottery jackpot
An 84-year-old widow has won a $590m Powerball lottery jackpot.
Gloria MacKenzie of Zephyrhills, Florida purchased the only $2 ticket to match all six winning numbers in the 18 May draw.
Although not the biggest US lottery jackpot of all time, the prize is the largest ever paid to a sole winner.
Mrs MacKenzie has chosen to receive a single lump-sum payment of just over $370m, rather than the full amount in 30 annual instalments, meaning she will take home around $270m after federal taxes.
The winner, who purchased the lucky ticket from a Publix grocery store after a fellow customer let her overtake her in the queue, revealed that she had an agreement to split any winnings with her son Scott.
"We are grateful for this blessing of winning the Florida Lottery Powerball jackpot and appreciate the interest of the public, the State of Florida and the lottery," said MacKenzie, who also appealed for privacy.
