Odds offered on Rooney and van Persie surpassing class of ‘99
Bookmakers Bwin have reacted to the news of Robin van Persie’s imminent arrival at Old Trafford by offering odds of 3/1 that the Dutchman and new strike partner Wayne Rooney score more than 53 club goals between them next season in all competitions.
That was the mark set by United’s potent forward pairing of Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole during the Premier League giant’s treble-winning campaign in 1998/99 when the duo fired their side to league, FA Cup and Champions League glory.
Rooney and Van Persie – who is expected to complete a £24m move north in time for United’s first game of the season again Everton on Monday – scored 72 club goals in all competitions between them last season
Rooney is refusing to be drawn on his aims for the coming campaign however, saying: “I don’t set myself goal targets – the main aim is to just help the team be successful.”
The England striker was speaking at a press conference to unveil Bwin as the new gaming and betting partners of Manchester United in an initial three-year deal.
