Arsenal Confirm Cazorla Signing
Arsenal Football Club have today confirmed the signing of Spanish international Santi Cazorla on a long-term contract for a fee thought to be in the region of £15 million.
The 27-year-old midfielder completed his move from La Liga side Malaga after passing a medical at the London club and now becomes Arsenal’s third new signing of the summer.
Cazorla – who can play on either wing or centrally – will join fellow new recruits Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud at Arsenal’s pre-season training camp in Germany ahead of a friendly with Cologne.
It is understood that the deal for Cazorla had been delayed by Malaga’s current financial problems, but the two clubs reached agreement this morning in a move that seemingly suits all parties.
“Santi Cazorla is a great signing for us,” said Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger. “He is a player with good experience at both club and international level who will add significant quality to our squad.
“He is a versatile attacking midfielder who can play comfortably on either side of the pitch or centrally. He has good pace, is technically gifted and will be a huge asset to Arsenal Football Club.”
The signing may also have a knock-on effect on the future of want away striker Robin van Persie, who has so far refused to sign a new contract at the Emirates due to a perceived “lack of ambition”.
However, with Arsenal having now spent around £40 million in the transfer window, the Dutchman may yet be persuaded to stay at the club if their league performance matches their spending.
