Roberto Mancini Doubtful Over Van Persie Signing
Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has poured cold water over speculation linking Arsenal striker Robin Van Persie to the reigning Premier League champions this summer by indicating that he does not expect the transfer to be concluded.
Van Persie, who topped the Premier League scoring charts last season with 30 goals, said earlier in the summer that he would not be signing a new deal at the Emirates, opening the door for a number of clubs to enquire about signing the Dutchman.
However, with City, Manchester United and Juventus having all already failed in their bids to secure the services of the 29-year-old, Mancini admitted that the chances of acquiring the player are growing increasingly slim. “Van Persie? No, I don’t think he will come here,” he said.
Arsenal for their part have indicated that they are not unwilling to sell their influential captain, although manager Arsene Wenger has insisted that he will only leave for the right price – with a fee in excess of £20 million thought to be the amount that the Frenchman has in mind for the player.
While Mancini’s comments may signal the end of City’s interest in Van Persie, it is understood that United and Juventus – both of whom the player is believed to have expressed a preference for due to their prestige and tradition – will both come back with improved offers in the coming weeks.
