Brits to bet £50m on London Olympics
Olympic betting could reach £50m this summer, with one in eight Brits expected to place a wager on the upcoming Games.
The prediction of patriotic punting comes from bookmakers Coral, who also say that around three million of the expected Olympic bettors will be first-time backers.
Coral are offering odds on the gold medal chances of a host of Team GB athletes, including swimming sensation Rebecca Adlington, who is priced at 1/2 for glory in the women’s 800m freestyle.
Recent Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins is available at evens to claim the men’s individual time trial, while young diver Tom Daley is listed at 5/2 for success in the men’s individual 10m platform.
Coral head of PR David Stevens said: “Turnover across the industry could top £50m, with one in eight of those we questioned saying they would be enjoying a flutter on the Games.
“British sport is on a high, with Andy Murray reaching the Wimbledon final and Bradley Wiggins becoming the first British winner of the Tour de France.”
