Punting parents offered ‘play for England’ bets
Parents are being handed free bets to back their child for soccer success as part of a new promotion by bookmakers William Hill.
The ‘Back Your Pride and Joy’ campaign is giving away 200,000 free £5 bets at odds of 1000/1 that a proud parent’s child will one day play for the England football team.
Hills, who are the official betting partner of the FA, are offering the wagers, which come in the form of a customised certificate, to all customers placing a £10 football bet either in-shop or online.
The promotion is being backed by former England goalkeeper Chris Kirkland and his father Eddie, who placed a £100 bet with Hills when Chris was 12 years old that the youngster would one day play for his country.
The bet paid out £10,000 when Chris made his debut for England against Greece at Old Trafford in 2006.
William Hill spokesman Tony Kenny said: "Chris and Eddie are living proof that bets like this come off, but we are keen to see future England talent nurtured.
"It is a novelty bet with a serious side and that is that we should all be backing England going forward in the future."
