Rooney’s Overhead Kick Voted Premier League’s Best Ever Goal
Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney’s stunning overhead kick against arch-rivals Manchester City has been voted the best ever goal of the Premier League era in a poll conducted by the English football league’s top division.
The strike – scored late in the second half during the Manchester derby in February 2011 – secured United a 2-1 against their “noisy neighbours” in a game that proved crucial to them reclaiming the Premier League title from Carlo Ancelotti’s Chelsea.
Having reacted the quickest to an inviting cross from Portuguese winger Luis Nani, Rooney managed to find a pocket of space between City defenders Micah Richards and Vincent Kompany and attempted an outrageous piece of skill with the ball some 8ft in the air.
The result was a sumptuous strike that hit through the ball to guide it back across goal in the direction of Nani’s cross, comprehensively beating City ‘keeper Joe Hart by arcing into the top corner – with the England stopper left helplessly rooted to the spot as Old Trafford erupted.
Rooney’s wonder strike held off competition from nine other spectacular efforts in a public vote held to commemorate 20 years of the Premier League, with Dennis Bergkamp’s impudent flick and spin against Newcastle and Thierry Henry’s fierce volley against United finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively.
