Mark Cavendish heads Sports Personality betting

Cyclist Mark Cavendish is favourite to win this year’s Sports Personality of the Year award ahead of tonight’s live result.

The 26-year-old is offered at a best price of 4/11 with Ladbrokes, according to odds comparison website Oddschecker, having won both the Tour de France green jersey and the world road race this year.

Next in the betting comes Northern Irish golfer Darren Clarke, priced at 6/1 with Sky Bet and Paddy Power following his three-shot victory at this year’s open at Royal St George's.

Athlete Mo Farah is 14/1 third-favourite with a number of bookmakers as a result of his gold medal in the 5,000m at the World Championships in August, on top of the silver he received in the 10,000m.

A total of ten sportsmen have been nominated for the award, with boxer Amir Khan and tennis player Andy Murray stuck at the back of the field, with both available at a best price of 500/1 with Ladbrokes.

The BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2011 broadcast begins at 8pm on BBC One.
