Denman retired following training injury
Legendary National Hunt horse Denman has officially been retired.
The 11-year-old suffered a tendon injury while preparing for this month’s Lexus Chase at Leopardstown, leaving trainer Paul Nicholls with no choice but to end the career of one of his best ever horses.
“It is with great regret that I have to announce the retirement of Denman,” said Nicholls. "A scan revealed tiny damage to his near fore tendon. It was the only course of action to take. Denman will always be a legend here at Ditcheat."
Nicholls revealed that the horse had been fine as recently as Wednesday morning before pulling up on Thursday. A scan then confirmed the tendon injury.
Famous for his battles with stablemate Kauto Star, Denman’s career highlights include winning the 2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup, the 2007 Lexus, the 2007 and 2009 Hennessy Gold Cups, the 2008 Aon Chase and the 2007 Royal & SunAlliance Chase.
