League Cup Quarter Finals Round-Up
Manchester City, Cardiff and Liverpool have all progressed to the semi-finals of the Carling Cup, with the competition’s final berth reserved for the winner of tonight’s Old Trafford clash between Manchester United and Crystal Palace.
United’s “noisy neighbours” booked their place in the semis courtesy of Sergio Aguero’s goal at the end of a fine counter-attack late in the game, and they held on to beat a spirited but under-strength Arsenal side 1-0 at the Emirates.
Coventry, meanwhile, dispatched struggling Blackburn Rovers courtesy of goals from Kenny Miller and Anthony Gerrard in either half, though Rovers manager Steve Kean later admitted he “forfeited” the game to focus on Premier League survival.
That just left Liverpool to spring a surprise result at Stamford Bridge as they beat an out-of-sorts Chelsea, despite Andy Carroll missing an early penalty, thanks to second half strikes from Maxi Rodriguez and Martin Kelly in a comfortable 2-0 win.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s men will have the chance to join the three teams in the semi-final draw tonight when they entertain Palace at home – and with the Premier League side overwhelming favourites, we could end up with a very strong final four indeed.
