PokerStars Sponsor German Football Stadium
As if wide-scale domination of the poker landscape in Europe and a monopoly on the game’s top pros wasn’t enough, PokerStars.net have now branched out even further by lending their support to a German football team.
The online poker giants will now be sponsoring a multi-purpose stadium in Lubeck, Germany and have purchased exclusive naming rights to the property in a three year deal with further options for a reported €120,000 a year.
The 18,000 capacity stadium – previously known as Stadion an der Lohmuhle – will now feature PokerStars.de at the start of its name in a move that is seen by many as the first step towards a boom in the region’s online gambling market.
The home of German fourth-division side VfB Lubeck, the stadium is situated in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, which is opening its doors to online gambling having already become the first state to legalise and regulate online poker in the country.
Operators will be able to apply for online betting licenses in the state in March 2012 and with the PokerStars.de brand now displayed prominently on the Stadion an der Lohmuhle, they look well-placed to take advantage of the relaxing of current laws.
