FA Cup First Round betting preview with Blue Square
Will Chrimes brings you round-by-round betting previews of this season’s FA Cup with Blue Square.
Saturday’s FA Cup action kicks off with Newport County and Shrewsbury Town meeting in South Wales in the 131st year of the infamous competition. Managed by former Tottenham player Justin Edinburgh, the Exiles are struggling near the bottom of the Blue Square Premier. The hosts have won only once in six league games and have really struggled for goals in the process.
In contrast, Shrewsbury are flying high in League Two and come into the cup clash off an impressive 2-0 win at Dagenham and Redbridge. Even with home advantage the Exiles look set to struggle and fall at the first hurdle.
Halifax Town will need a huge performance if they’re to reach the second round as Charlton Athletic visit on Sunday lunch-time. The Addicks have won four on the spin and have bagged 15 goals in that period. Bradley Wright-Phillips has scored six of those and will relish the opportunity to get at Halifax’s back four. Chris Powell is doing a fantastic job at the Valley and an upset looks very unlikely.
Sunday’s final live game sees Morecambe take on Sheffield Wednesday. These two clubs have never met in their history and the fans inside Christie Park can expect a cracking atmosphere. The Shrimps are fifth in League Two and will fancy their chances of an upset. Morecambe won their most recent home game and Wednesday were held to a goalless draw last time out, so the 11/5 available on a replay looks a worthwhile bet.
