Lee Rawson Topples GUKPT Goliath
Lee Rawson will go down in the history books as the winner of Europe’s biggest ever land-based tournament after he overcame a truly gargantuan field of 1,765 runners to take down the GUKPT Goliath.
For accomplishing the impressive feat, Rawson bagged himself a first prize of £32,705 after defeating Mark Broomhall heads-up when his pocket jacks held against Broomhall’s speculative shove with 8d 4d on a 7d 2s 2h flop.
Broomhall took home £21,120 for his efforts, but it was a weekend for smiles all round as 261 players all made the money, with the unfortunate 28 players who bubbled on Day 2 awarded a seat in next year’s event in a nice touch from GUKPT.
Further good news came for the Goliath’s charity partner, Marie Curie, who managed to raise over £10,000 for their worthy cause through a combination of registration fees and additional donations over the course of the five-day tournament in Coventry.
In the GUKPT Goliath Team Challenge, meanwhile, a deep run from last woman standing Helen Godfrey saw Team Punter’s Lounge C finish as the highest-scoring team, meaning that all members will receive a free buy-in to next year’s tournament.
