Lotto error offers 45,000 players free cars
A lottery balls-up left thousands of players mistakenly believing they had won a brand new convertible.
Prior to Wednesday’s Lotto draw in Ireland, the National Lottery revealed that if the jackpot was won by just a single person, that lucky player would walk away with a Jaguar XK convertible as well as the prize money.
However, an error on the website led to all prize winners who checked their tickets online being told they had won the car in addition to their money. This would have led to the National Lottery giving away Jaguar XK’s to 45,438 people.
The mistake was eventually corrected and it was later revealed that the actual winner of the €150,000 car – along with the €4.5 million Lotto jackpot – was a player from Carlow in south-east Ireland.
An apology was issued to all of those affected by the mistake but it was confirmed that no compensation would be offered.
