Seattle Pounded: Wayne Rooney scores 3 in the States
Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney struck a 21-minute hat-trick as the Seattle Sounders were routed 7-0 at the CenturyLink Field as part of the club’s pre-season tour of America.
Rooney was only introduced as a second-half substitute but his class soon told as he drilled home his first of three moments after the re-start and completed his treble just 18 minutes later.
The England international’s goals were complemented by strikes from Michael Owen, Mame Biram Diouf, Park Ji Sung and Gabriel Obertan as United took their pre-season tally to 11 goals in two games.
The Major League Soccer side had promised their visitors would receive “a different type of atmosphere” in Seattle and they were not disappointed as 67,000 fans flocked to the stadium to show their appreciation.
Though the American fans welcomed the Premier League side with open arms, they made no secret of who they wanted to win the game but in the end were left to simply watch in awe as the Sounders were brushed aside.
The next stop for United will be in Chicago on Friday before further engagements in New Jersey and Washington complete their tour of the USA later this month. Based on their performance in this game, both games look likely to be a sell-out.
