Aston Villa Complete Capture of Shay Given
Aston Villa have replaced one departing veteran goalkeeper with another as Manchester City reserve Shay Given was bought in for the departing Brad Friedel.
Given, who signed a five-year deal with the Midlands club, was forced to endure a frustrating time at City as injuries and the emergence of Joe Hart left him benched.
However, the 35-year-old Irish stopper will now again get to play centre stage for a Premier League club after he became the first signing of Alex McLeish’s Villa reign.
Having made over 400 Premier League appearances, Given will add some much needed stability to a young Villa side and McLeish is thrilled to have him in his team.
“Shay has come here with something of a point to prove and that won’t do him any harm at all,” said the former Birmingham boss “everybody who has watched him perform over many years in the Premier League will know his pedigree, so we believe we have secured one of the best goalkeepers in the business.”
Despite McLeish’s optimism over his new recruit, he will remain an unpopular figure on the Villa terraces due to his cross-city connections and won’t be embraced by the home supporters until he starts getting the results to match their loft expectations.
