Premier League Trio Make Winning Start To Pre-Season
Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool all got their pre-season campaigns off to a winning start as the Premier League trio scored four goals apiece to brush aside a selection of international opposition.
United were able to cruise past Major League Soccer side New England Revolution in the first match of their five-game tour of America thanks to goals from Michael Owen, Federico Macheda (2) and Park Ji Sung.
Kenny Mansally scored the hosts only goal of the game after he unwittingly deflected Benny Feilhaber’s dubious free-kick into the back of the net, but the 4-1 final scoreline was even more comfortable than the margin suggested.
Arsenal, meanwhile, had no trouble getting the better of a Malaysia XI side as an Aaron Ramsey penalty after five minutes set the tone for a comfortable 4-0 win, with Theo Walcott, Carlos Vela and Tomas Rosicky all opening their pre-season accounts.
Liverpool also managed to record a four-star performance against Guangdong in China yesterday, though the Reds were made to sweat on the result as a late surge from the home side almost salvaged a draw following two goals in stoppage time.
Christian Poulsen opened the scoring for Liverpool and David Ngog doubled the lead three minutes later. Youngster Conor Coady added a third against the run of play in the second half before the hosts pulled one back. Carroll then made it 4-1 five minutes from time, but late goals from Yin Hongbo and Lu Lin set up an exciting finale.
