DeGale and Groves to bet fight fee on title contest
James DeGale and George Groves have upped the ante ahead of their British and Commonwealth title clash on Saturday by agreeing to bet Groves’s fight earnings on the outcome of the bout.
The men – who both boast unbeaten professional records – shook hands on a deal that would see Olympic gold medalist DeGale claim Groves’s fight purse if he wins the contest, while the Harlesden fighter would have to hand over the same amount should he lose to Groves at the O2 Arena in London.
DeGale suggested the bet at a press conference, stating: “I’m so confident, I will cover your wage. You have the chance to double your money.” Later he added: “I don’t want him to get a pay-day, so when I win, I’ll get his purse. The drinks are on me on Saturday!”
Bet365 make DeGale a 2/7 favourite to win the fight, with Groves offered at 11/4.
