Punters nicely rewarded for Royal Wedding bets

The bookies have been quick to admit that a lot of the favourites for the Royal Wedding came through on the big day, giving many punters the joy of some extra money to add to their extra day off.

Fred Done, a spokesperson for Betfred, said: "Having daughters’ weddings have always been costly but today was a disaster. Royal punters are celebrating with a King's ransom but of course I wish the couple the very best for the future."

The odds between bookmakers varied, but they all had Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen as one of the favourites to design Kate Middleton’s dress. The Bride’s modest train length also rewarded punters - the odds on a simple, less extravagant train was an early favourite.

Another two of the fashion-related bets which were favourites and came through were the colour of the Queen's hat and the Bride’s dress. The Queen wore an all-yellow ensemble accessorised with a yellow hat, while Kate, now known as the Duchess of Cambridge, wore an ivory gown.

Bookies did however manage to save an estimated £24,000 as Prince Phillip managed to remain awake throughout the ceremony – his odds were significantly slashed from 40/1 to 8/1 in the final days to the wedding. Bookies also didn’t have to pay out 6/1 odds on Kate Middleton leaving her Prince waiting for more than twelve minutes, as she was only a 20 seconds behind schedule.
