England deny misjudging Ireland following Six Nations video leak
The Rugby Football Union (RFU) has insisted England did not take their final Six Nations opponents Ireland too lightly, despite the leaking of a sponsor’s video celebrating an English Grand Slam success.
The video, created by Nike prior to the completion of the series, features various England players and has the words "Grand Slam Champions 2011" appearing on screen at the end. England’s hopes of achieving the feat were dashed with a 24-8 loss to the Irish on the last weekend of the competition.
The RFU reacted to the leak by releasing a statement saying: "Forward planning is a crucial part of all commercial partnerships and all contingencies, winning or losing, have to be considered.
It is disappointing that details of Nike's internal planning has got into the public domain. In no way did the RFU or the England team underestimate the challenge that the Ireland team would pose.”
Bet365 price England at 15/8 to win next year’s Six Nations, behind 13/8 favourites France. Ireland are next in the betting at 9/2.
