Favourites Tipped To Progress in Champions League

16/3/2011
With both Chelsea and Real Madrid having recorded positive results away from home in the last round of Champions League fixtures, it should come as little surprise that the bookies are tipping them to finish the job in their respective return legs tonight.

Chelsea will play FC Copenhagen at Stamford Bridge having already beaten the Danish side 2-0 in the first leg and the chances of an upset are slim to none. You can currently get just 3/10 on the Premier League champions winning the tie at Bet365.

Copenhagen for their part are 9/1 to secure a victory, but such odds create a false impression as the Danish minnows are a massive 33/1 to actually progress from the tie. Certainly, it will take a very poor performance from Chelsea for that to happen.

In the evening’s other fixture, meanwhile, Lyon face an uphill battle to overturn an away goal in the Bernabeu after drawing 1-1 at home and bookies currently have Jose Mourinho’s men down as 1/3 favourites to win on the night and 1/6 to qualify overall.

Unfortunately, the odds aren’t quite so favourable for Lyon at 17/2, but the Ligue 1 side will know that any win will see them through and though they may not be the side that they were a few seasons ago, they have considerable pedigree in Europe.

So, if the bookmakers prices are to be believed, not a night of high drama in the Champions League, but two entertaining games nevertheless – at the very least, let’s hope that the two visiting sides will give the odds compilers a bit of a sweat.
