David Haye closes in on Klitschko contest
British boxing star David Haye is hoping to fight Wladimir Klitschko in July.
WBA heavyweight champion Haye says that his next scheduled fight, a mandatory defence against Ruslan Chagaev set for May, has been cancelled, leaving him free to fight IBF champion Klitschko in the summer.
Haye has stated for some time that he wants to retire from the ring before he turns 31 in October and it now seems that a 2 July contest with the Ukranian is a distinct possibility. "One way or another my next fight is going to be in July. I am hoping it is going to be against Wladimir Klitschko," said Haye. "I believe we are pretty close to agreeing. That's what I believe. Whether we are or not is a whole different matter.”
One stumbling block could be Klitschko’s scheduled fight with Briton Derek Chisora on 30 April, a contest that, unless moved, Haye says would leave his own Klitschko clash "effectively impossible".
Boylesports make Haye the 7/4 underdog to win any future bout with Klitschko, with the Ukranian offered at 4/9. A draw is priced at 25/1.
