Betfair ad banned by ASA
A Betfair TV advert has been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority.
The advert features two men discussing sport in a pub, with their comments to each other passed back and forth between them by a third ‘middle-man’. The ad goes on to claim that Betfair can “cut out the middle man”.
Twenty three complaints were received and the ASA have moved to ban the ad in its current form, ruling that its middle-man claim was ambiguous and misleading because the site actually takes a 5% commission on bets.
Betfair responded by saying that the claim was justified because the advert showed that people can bet punter-to-punter on Betfair rather than having go through a traditional bookmaker. The company added that its charging mechanism is “more transparent and straightforward than that of a traditional bookmaker” and that the on-screen text displayed during the advert stated that terms and conditions applied.
