Isaia takes down WPT Venice

9/2/2011
Alessio Isaia has won the WPT Venice after an eight-hour heads-up battle.

The 24-year-old Italian claimed €380,000 after defeating Szabolcs Mayer in a marathon finale, their eight hour 20 minute duel coming to an end when Isaia called Mayer’s all-in with A-Q. Mayer had Q-6 and neither the flop, turn nor river offered any help to the Hungarian who had to settle for second place, with local favourite Isaia crowned champion. "I'm very happy. I've been trying to win a big tournament for three or four years. I came close in the EPT but I never achieved it,” said Isaia. “I'm even more happy to win it in Italy, my home country. I'm very, very tired. We played for eight hours heads-up, which was exhausting. “
