Ian Thorpe to make swimming comeback
Ian Thorpe is to return to competitive swimming.
The 28-year-old multiple world and Olympic champion retired in 2006 but has announced that he intends to return for the 2012 London Olympics.
“It hasn't been something I've taken lightly, I made the decision last September,” the Australian said. “I went to see the swimming venue for the London Olympics and it's an extraordinary venue and I could taste it, which is something I haven't felt for a very, very long time.”
Thorpe added that he had registered for Swimming Australia's drug testing regime so that he could be eligible for the Australian Olympic selection trials in March 2012. Once registered, governing body Fina’s regulations dictate that he won’t be able to compete competitively for nine months.
Thorpe already holds five Olympic gold medals, three silvers and one bronze, as well as 12 world championship medals, 11 commonwealth medals and 13 world records.
