Spurs Destroyed By Rampant Fulham
A stunning first 45 minutes for Fulham in their FA Cup fourth round tie against Tottenham Hotspur condemned Harry Redknapp’s men to an early exit after the hosts scored four goals without reply.
Captain Danny Murphy was the architect-in-chief of Spurs’ downfall as he struck twice from the spot in the first 15 minutes after fouls on Clint Dempsey and Moussa Dembele by Alan Hutton and Michael Dawson respectively.
The latter of the two Spurs defenders was issued a straight red card for hauling Dembele back by the shirt after the Fulham forward had hustled him out of possession and – just as he had done before – Murphy made no mistake from the spot.
Facing a two-goal deficit and a numerical disadvantage Spurs were always going to have a mountain to climb, but the tie was ended as a contest in the 23rd minute when more poor defending allowed Brede Hangeland to turn a home a third from a corner.
By this point Redknapp’s team were being run ragged and it was only a matter of time before they conceded again, this time Dembele powering home a tidy finish after Sebastian Bassong allowed him to run three just seconds before the half-time interval.
Having received such a comprehensive beating in the first half many had expected Fulham to notch a cricket score by full time, but the reality was that Spurs managed to hold firm for the second 45 minutes and just about avoided further embarrassment.
As reward for their efforts, Fulham will now face an all-Premier League tie in the fifth round against the winner of Bolton’s replay against Wigan.
