Transfer deadline day: Torres seeks Chelsea switch
Football fans can expect a day of suspense and speculation as the January transfer window ticks down to its 11pm conclusion.
Following Liverpool’s rejection of Chelsea’s bid for Fernando Torres and the Spanish striker’s subsequent transfer request, the Blues are expected to come back with an improved offer that could include forward Nicolas Anelka as a makeweight. Liverpool are said to want £50m for Torres, though they could accept a lesser fee for the 26-year-old were Anelka involved in any kind of deal.
There are also rumours that Tottenham have had a £40m bid for Sergio Aguero rejected by Atletico Madrid, while the main deal to have definitely gone through at the time of writing is Liverpool full-back Paul Konchesky joining Championship side Nottingham Forest on loan.
Once the window has shut at 11pm clubs cannot sign players on permanent deals until the season has ended, although unattached players can be brought in at any time.
