Cyprus Try for Online Gambling Ban
Government officials in Cyprus have been pushing for a chance to appeal to the European Commission in order to enforce an online gambling bid in their country. According to officials, the ban is necessary to reduce criminal behaviour. Portugal had a similar appeal accepted some time back which is one of the main reasons for Cyprus trying the same thing.
At present the EU stipulates that a country cannot prohibit other member countries from conducting business in their territory. However, if Cyprus is successful this will essentially nullify that law and allow them to ban all offshore gambling companies.
Many predict that the hearing on Wednesday will be bad news for Cyprus and the proposal rejected on the grounds that crime reduction is merely an excuse to implement a ban. Others, however, believe that Portugal’s success has paved the way for other countries to do the same. The most likely outcome seems to be though that the Commission will reject the idea but instruct Cyprus to appeal against it. If this occurs the process will likely be delayed for sometime, which subsequently means a ban will become tougher to implement.
