Hockey players face off at charity poker.
Online poker site, PartyPoker.net is holding yet another poker event in the name of charity. Several big name hockey players from the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) will compete in the PartyPoker.net Charity Faceoff, televised in a seven-part, sixty-minute TSN series premiering on December 16th.
This made-for-TV Texas Hold 'Em tournament will feature sixteen current and former NHLers with a total purse of CDN$100,000, all going to the players' charities of choice. Some of the players taking part in this event will be three-time Vezina winner and New Jersey Devils goalie Martin Brodeur; Toronto Maple Leafs blueliner Bryan McCabe; Sheldon Souray and Craig Rivet of the Montreal Canadiens; and tough guys Sean Avery, Donald Brashear and Georges Laraque.
The route to the final will follow a preliminary round featuring four tables of four players, with the winner and second place finisher from each table moving on. Two tables of four players make up the semi-final round, while one table of four will play for the championship in the final episode.
TV and radio sports personality Blake Price will host the tournament, which will represent thirteen different charities. Some of the charities include the NHLPA's Goals & Dreams Fund, which donates money to grassroots hockey programs. The champion of PartyPoker.net Charity Faceoff will see their charity awarded CDN$20,000, while the second place finisher's chosen charity receives CDN$10,000.
All of the other participants' charities will be given CDN$5,000. This will be the first tournament of its kind to feature NHL stars, giving their fans an exclusive look at their off-ice personalities. The event was filmed in August in Montreal for screening later this month.
