Bets piled on Gamu Nhengu for Christmas No 1
X-Factor contestant Gamu Nhengu is rapidly becoming a real contender for this year’s Christmas No 1, despite never making it to the final stages of the competition.
X-Factor winners dominated the No 1 slot for four consecutive years from 2005 to 2008. However, last year saw an usual turn of events for the coveted festive top spot, as Rage Against the Machine were victorious after an internet campaign to stop Joe McElderry, the 2009 X-Factor winner, from notching another No 1 for X Factor.
William Hill have been inundated with bets for Gamu to have this year’s Christmas No 1, and she is now third favourite. The winner of the X-Factor still dominates the bookies’ top spot at 8/15, but they are closely followed by The Trashmen (this year’s protest choice) at 9/4 and Gamu, who is at 7/1.
Gamu has been popular with the bookies, as she was also the hot favourite to be Cheryl Cole’s wild-card entry into the live stages, but still didn’t make it through as her mentor chose TreyC Cohen instead.
It’s been said that X-Factor winners may have taken their Christmas Number 1 spots for granted after winning the show in the past, but this year, it appears to be anyone’s game.
