European Poker Tour Czech Jan Skampa wins €682,000
Two records in one day, as well as €682,000 is enough to make anyone smile and as local boy Jan Skampa posed for pictures his elation was clear for all to see. The Prague native had just bested a tough EPT field to take down Czech leg of the prestigious poker tour. The victory not only booked the young player a seat in the season’s Grand Final but his win took him to the top of the Czech all-time money winner list.
His final table appearance also earned him another record as he became the first player to reach back-to-back EPT final tables since Ram Vaswani and Julian Thew both final tabled the Dublin and Copenhagen legs in season one.
Skampa headed into the final table the chip leader but with stiff competition from all angles which included EPT stalwart and Mr Consistency, Luca Pagano.
After Sven Eichelbaum and Gustav Ekerot left the table the Italian Pokerstars sponsored pro Pagano’s A-J ran head first into the pocket queens of Stefan Mattsson. He couldn’t find his three outer and hit the rail in sixth taking home €100,000 for his efforts. Mattsson continued his hot streak by taking out Larry Ryan in the very next hand but as his luck began to dissipate the final battle for the title was between Eyal Avitan and Skampa.
After clawing back the chip deficit Skampa slowly wore down his opponent before Avitan made a major misstep, running his J-9 into the pocket jacks of Skampa. With no miracles forthcoming the 23 year old Czech etched his name into the record books and took home a rather juicy payday.
