Manchester United Ryan Giggs for Sports Personality of the Year?

With the annual celebration of the great and the good in the sporting world taking place this weekend the bookmakers and sports pundits are busy forming their predictions for who’ll take the top prize.

Currently in the running for the sports personality of the year are Formula One World Champion Jenson Button, Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs, heptathlon heroin Jessica Ennis and giant killer David “The Haymaker” Haye. Having had his odds slashed from 20/1 to 3/1 it looks as though Giggs could be the value bet of the competition but at 4/6 many bookies are confident that Button’s name will be the one engraved on the prestigious trophy. Indeed, motor racing drivers have traditionally fared very well at the awards ceremony with Damon Hill and Nigel Mansell both taking multiple honours in recent years.

Despite snatching the heavyweight boxing title from the man mountain Nikolai Valuev the chances that David Haye will be adding another title to his collection by the end of this year are slim. The last boxer to win the title of sports personality of the year was Joe Calzaghe when he narrowly beat Formula One star Lewis Hamilton and fellow boxing legend Ricky Hatton.

Although athlete Chris Hoy took the gong last year it will be tough for athlete Jessica Ennis to overcome the competition and follow in the footsteps of the last female winners of the title Zara Phillips and Kelly Holmes. It has been another memorable year for British sportsmen and women on the international stage which makes this year’s voting one of the toughest ever. Who will walk away with the title? Tune in on Saturday night to find out.
