Disgraced Sprinter Marion Jones Set for NBA
Disgraced ex-sprinter Marion Jones has revealed that she is currently undertaking basketball training with a view to playing in the women’s NBA.
The 34-year-old, who only left prison in September of last year, had previously been serving a six-month sentence for lying about steroid abuse and her involvement in a drugs fraud case.
Since her release, reports have indicated that Jones has been practicing her basketball skills in San Antonio and, having played college basketball in North Carolina, she has considerable background in the sport. As a starting point guard Jones even helped her team to the national championship in 1994.
In an interview with the New York Times, Jones said of her proposed move to women’s NBA: “It would be an interesting journey if I decide to do this. It would give me the opportunity to share my message with young people on a bigger platform and it would give me the opportunity to get a second chance”.
Meanwhile, San Antonio Silver Stars coach Dan Hughes revealed that he had not yet been informed by assistants whether Jones has the talent to play in the WNBA, but was quick to praise her for trying. “I deal with people where they are right now,” Hughes explained. “If she’s interested in playing, great for her. The past is the past.”
