1/12/2009
The Las Vegas Journal has reported that former NFL star Ross Verba spent Thanksgiving in a Phoenix jail after failing to pay off a $26,000 gambling debt to the Palms Casino, Las Vegas. The former Green Bay Packers player was accused of writing three bad cheques in January 2008 and the casino alerted the authorities after it became clear that Verba was not intending to make good his bill.

Verda has a chequered record with the law when it comes to gambling. He was detained in Wisconsin in 2007 for failing to pay $50,000 in Wynn Las Vegas markers although in this case the payments were eventually made. Now he faces the prospect of uncertain times as the Palms Casino flexes their muscles over his latest misdemeanour.

Casinos are naturally strict when calling in their tabs and give no special treatment to individuals with celebrity status. Verda made his name as an offensive linesman in his eight seasons with the Packers and also turned out with the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions. Now he is facing extradition orders back to Nevada an in this case, as with most the authorities are firmly on the casinos side.
