BetOnSports’ Gary Kaplan jailed
Gary Kaplan has been jailed for four years for his part in founding the company BetOnSports’ which allowed Americans to take part in online gambling which is currently illegal due to the UIGEA.
On top of his jail term he has been forced to hand over £26m from his illegal earnings. Despite the company being based in London and also having a base in Costa Rica, Kaplan was bought before a US judge and admitted charges of fraud, and racketeering.
Reports say that despite losing £26m he still have many millions located in other country bank accounts including Switzerland.
Kaplan admitted to launching businesses in Aruba, Antigua and Costa Rica to provide online gambling to American residents. The judge came down hard on Kaplan saying that he continually broke laws that he personally didn’t believe in.
BetsOnSports was highly successful with over 1,700 employees and enjoyed a customer base of nearly one million.
