Stars Play Out Classic at English Poker Open (EPO)
In a month that saw some poor turnouts for the UK tours and the high stakes London Poker Circuit close shop after just a few months, it was good to see some faith restored in the UK tournament scene as the world’s best descended on Dusk Till Dawn for the English Poker Open.
The $5,000 WSOPE warm-up act, sponsored by RakeTheRake.com, attracted some of the game’s biggest faces, including Phil Hellmuth, Doyle Brunson, and English stars James Akenhead, Devilfish and most of the Hendon Mob.
And the 213 players who’d stumped up their hard-earned to participate played out a friendly, festive event that succeeded in confirming Dusk Till Dawn’s place as one of Europe’s serious players (seeing its biggest ever payday at the club), the UK’s ability to hold major international poker events, and the continuing emergence of UK pros.
Englishman and Full Tilt pro David La Ronde took down the tournament to win the £208,367 first prize, defeating man-on-a-heater Michael Tureniec heads-up. La Ronde came runner-up at the GUKPT Luton last year while Tureniec is one of the final nine in the Partouche Poker Open that recently took place in France and now breaks till November.
