Australian Woman in Court Over Stolen Gambling Funds
A mother from Canberra, the Australian capital, has denied stealing more than AUD$500,000 of her children’s inheritance and losing it playing poker machines.
Katherine Hawcroft faces charges of 229 counts of theft from her three children and two nieces. Pleading not guilty, the ACT Supreme Court heard that Hawcroft had been entrusted with investment property in her children’s names until her youngest child turned 25 in 2011.
However, it is alleged that she secretly sold the property in 2000 and spent the proceeds on gambling. Police claim that most of the money was lost on poker machines at two Canberra casinos between late November 2000 and 2003.
The case continues.
