Usain Bolt to take up long jump?
It seems that being the fastest man on the planet isn’t enough for Jamaica’s Usain Bolt after he revealed he might compete in the long jump after dominating 100m and 200m. Bolt has now won both sprint titles at the Olympics and World Championships and while many expect his next move could be to the four-bend race over 400m, Bolt himself has shown an interest in hitting the sand pits.
"I'd love to try the long jump before I retire because I think I'd be very good at it," said the 23-year-old sprinter.
The news of taking up an additional discipline isn’t a revelation in itself, with many expecting to see Bolt take on the 400 meters before too long. That, seemingly, isn’t a move which Bolt is too keen on at the moment.
"I don't want to do it, but if my coach decides I'm dominant over 100m and 200m and says 'Let's try something new', I'll definitely put my heart and soul into it," he said.
Mike Powell, who currently holds the long jump record of 8.95m, believes Bolt could be the first man to break the 9m barrier.
“We are dealing with a freak of nature athlete,” said Powell – meant in an entirely complimentary manner.
