Chelsea beat Manchester United after penalties to clinch Community Shield
New Chelsea boss, Carlo Ancelotti, got a dream start to this years campaign by bagging the first silverware of the silver – the Community Shield.
Manchester United Premier League Champions 08/09 and FA Cup winners Chelsea came head to head last weekend during the Community Shield Final at Wembley Stadium.
It was United that started the stronger of the two teams with Nani making the most of his first opportunity and smashed home an impressive long-range shot. However, soon after the break United came un-done for the first time and were defeated by the head of Ricardo Carvalho and then a controversial goal from Frank Lampard.
The controversy came after Evra was left downed following a blatant barge from Michael Ballack which should have resulted in a dismissal but was missed by ref Chris Foy.
Wayne Rooney elegantly slid home an equaliser in the dying moments sending the game straight to penalties.
Unfortunately, United couldn’t convert their penalties with Giggs and Evra providing un-characteristically bad spot-kicks which allowed Chelsea to confidently put the ball in past a nervous looking Ben Foster.
