US Senator Robert Menendez Latest To Introduce Online Poker Bill
Following on from Barny Frank’s lead, the Democratic Senator who first launched objections to the UIGEA (Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act), Robert Menendez, Barny Frank’s Democratic colleague, has pitched a bill to Congress proposing regulation for online poker.
S 8309, the Internet Poker and Games of Skill Regulation, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement Act, is solely aimed at online games of skill – namely poker, which Menendez says should be legalized and licensed. Sports betting is not included in his plans, unlike Barny Frank’s.
The future for the UIGEA seems bleak as Barney Frank's original online gambling bill is gaining a backing, the current number of co-sponsors for the online gambling bill reaching 54, together with mass support from the Poker Players’ Alliance (PPA) who continue a concerted effort on the forums and in the press to force Congress to reconsider.
