Arturo Gatti Found Strangled
The body of Arturo Gatti, the former boxing world champion, has been found at his rented apartment in Brazil. His wife, 23-year old Amanda Rodrigues has been questioned by investigators, who believe that she strangled Gatti as he slept after an altercation earlier in the evening.
According to news sources in the northeastern Pernambuco state, the couple had argued earlier in the night, with the couple then returning to the apartment Gatti had been renting for what was described as their ‘second honeymoon’. Allegedly heavily intoxicated from the evening’s drinking, Gatti is thought to have passed out, with Rodrigues then using the opportunity to strangle him with the strap from her handbag. Investigators, who have kept Rodrigues in custody for questioning, were alerted when her statements meant she had not noticed the dead body of her husband for ten hours.
Gatti, who was involved in an epic trilogy of fights with Micky Ward in the ‘90s, was admired for his granite-like chin and straightforward punching style which made him one of the most exciting boxers of his time. HBO have said they will re-air three of his fights from Friday to Sunday. The Canadian retired with a record of 40-9 and 31 knockouts.
