Brazil and USA to meet in Confederations Cup final
Following their unlikely progress to the final of the Confederations Cup in South Africa, the United States will come up against the mighty Brazil in the final this Sunday.
The Brazilian side managed to edge their way past hosts South Africa in a competitive semi-final 1-0, with a Dani Alves freekick two minutes from time saving the South Americans’ blushes. The performance was not the most convincing of displays, which will give the United States real hope of causing yet another upset.
The key to success for the US will be their discipline. During large spells of the game against Spain, American backs were firmly against the wall, but defensive resilience kept the likes of Fernando Torres and David Silva at bay. To succeed against the Brazilians, US captain Carlos Bocanegra will need to once again inspire his team mates to be organized.
Bookmakers are sceptical of a repeat performance from the US, who have enjoyed a spectacular tournament already, surpassing all expectations. The best price available on Brazil is 1/6 with Sportingbet and Paddy Power, while the United States are widely available at 4/1. Luis Fabiano seems a practical certainty for the Golden Boot contest and should be backed even at the short price of 3/5 with Betfair.
