US Open Golf Preview: Tiger Woods firm favourite
This weekend sees the start of the US Open Golf at Bethpage State Park, and the top PGA pros will once again be gunning for pre-tournament favourite Tiger Woods.
Woods will be looking to make it two consecutive US Open titles following on from his dramatic win in 2008 against Rocco Mediate. The title eventually went to the first sudden death hole, after an 18-hole playoff on the Monday ended all tied. Mediate’s bogey 5 handed Woods his 14th major title.
As always, backing Tiger Woods is an abysmal prospect though, with the best price on the defending champion a wafer-thin 15/8 with SportingBet. The price can be considered even more treacherous when considering that Woods has had major knee surgery over the last year, and while he has returning to winning ways, the price is too lean to be considered.
Instead, punters are best advised to turn their attention to some of the other markets on offer, including top European player. Englishman Paul Casey has been in fine form, having notched two European Tour wins as well as the Shell Houston Open on the PGA. Casey can be backed at 6/1 with SportingBet, while Sergio Garcia (9/1, Stan James) and Rory McIlroy (10/1, Totesport) are considered next best options.
