Fernando Torres helps Spain Hammer New Zealand in FIFA Confederations Cup
A Fernando Torres hat-trick and goals from Cesc Fabregas and David Villa saw the European champions secure a 5-0 win against New Zealand in the FIFA Confederations Cup.
The competition, which sees each of the six FIFA confederation champions go head to head with the World Cup winners and hosting nation, often allows some of the smaller footballing nations to test their wares against some of the world’s elite nations.
The experience is all the Oceania champions gained from their match against the reigning European champions after Fernando Torres bagged three goals in the opening 17 minutes to effectively end the tie. Arsenal captain added a fourth just after the interval, while Real Madrid target David Villa completed the rout with a fifth.
In the other match from the first day of the competition saw South Africa snatch a draw from the jaws of victory against Iraq after a profligacy of goal-scoring opportunities up front. A spectacular miss just minutes from the end of the game by the South Africans meant the Iraqis could be pleased with their 0-0 stalemate.
The 5-0 drubbing by Spain means the European champions have been made the 13/10 favourites for the cup, with South American giants Brazil at 9/5 and Italy at 4/1.
