Transfer Rumours: Who will fill Cristiano Ronaldo's boots at Manchester United
With the news of Cristiano Ronaldo’s imminent departure to Spanish giants Real Madrid this summer sweeping across the UK, the gossip columns of the nation’s media have been busy speculating who will fill the Portugal winger’s boots at Old Trafford next season.
The most commonly featured trio of names to be fed through the rumour mill at the moment seem to be Franck Ribery, Antonio Valencia and Karim Benzema and The Guardian rather ambitiously claim that United will use the £80 million generated by the sale of Ronaldo to secure the signatures of all three.
Meanwhile, the broadsheet also throws the name of Barcelona striker Samuel Eto’o into the mix, while The Times speculates that David Silva could be the man to fill the considerable void left in the United midfield.
The Daily Star, on the other hand, casually suggest that Arjen Robben could be due a shock return to the Premier League and The Mail reckon that Sir Alex Ferguson will turn his attentions to persuading Carlos Tevez to stay at the club rather than looking to solve the goal-scoring problem elsewhere.
However, for all the speculation over the new faces that will be plying their trade at the Manchester club next season, The Times does not make pleasant reading this morning for United fans with a nervous disposition. The paper report that after losing his star midfielder, Sir Alex could also be without his best defender, Nemanja Vidic, next season due to his wife growing increasingly tired of life in Manchester.
